Website uptime monitor: free n8n workflow template

By the serverserv team · 3 min read · Updated

A simple uptime monitor that runs on your own n8n. Every five minutes it checks a list of URLs and emails you when one returns an error, does not answer or takes longer than ten seconds. No extra monitoring subscription needed.

How the workflow is wired, from the trigger at the top.

How it works

  1. Every 5 minutes starts the check.
  2. Sites to check is a short list of URLs you edit in a Code node.
  3. Check site requests each URL with a 10-second timeout and follows redirects. Errors are passed on instead of stopping the workflow.
  4. Is it down? flags anything that is not a 2xx or 3xx status, including no answer at all, and Email alert tells you which URL and why.

Nodes used: Schedule Trigger, Code, HTTP Request, If, Send Email.

What you need

  • Any SMTP account to send email from (your email provider, Brevo, Mailgun and so on)

Set it up

  1. Import the workflow and edit the list in Sites to check. Use full URLs with https://.
  2. Open Email alert, add an SMTP credential and set the from and to addresses.
  3. Activate the workflow. To test, add a URL that does not exist and wait five minutes.

New to importing? In n8n, open a new workflow, then either paste the copied JSON onto the canvas or use the menu (the three dots) and choose Import from file. Credentials are never included, so you connect your own accounts after importing.

Ways to customise it

  • Send the alert to Telegram, Slack or SMS instead of email.
  • Check for a word on the page (for example your company name) to catch broken pages that still return 200.
  • Only alert after two failures in a row by saving the last status in n8n's workflow static data.

Security notes

Run your monitor somewhere other than the sites it watches. If the same server hosts both, an outage takes down the monitor too and you hear nothing.

Where to run it

Templates with webhooks or triggers need n8n running all the time and reachable over HTTPS. You can run n8n on your own computer to try it, but for real use it belongs on a server. serverserv n8n Hosting gives you n8n pre-installed on your own KVM server with HTTPS, from $14.99 a month with no execution limits, and we will set up your first workflow for you, this one included.

Questions

Will it email me every 5 minutes while a site is down?

Yes, one email per failed check. That is deliberate so you do not miss it, but you can add a step that only alerts on the first failure.

Is n8n a replacement for a paid uptime service?

For a handful of sites, often yes. Paid services add checks from many countries, status pages and phone alerts.

Is this n8n template free to use?

Yes. It is free under the MIT licence, for personal and business use. You need your own n8n instance and your own accounts for the connected apps.
