The best VPS for AI agents: what specs you need and where to get them
By the serverserv team · 8 min read · Updated
Most AI agents do not need a big or expensive server. If the model runs in the cloud, a VPS with 2 vCPU and 4 GB of RAM handles a personal agent comfortably, and 8 GB covers agents that drive a web browser. What matters more than raw power is that the server stays on, has enough memory for browsers, and does not jump in price at renewal. This guide sizes a VPS for each kind of agent and compares where to buy one.
Why run an AI agent on a VPS?
An agent is only useful when it is online. A VPS keeps it running around the clock with a fixed IP address, so scheduled jobs fire on time and messages get answered while your laptop is closed.
- Always on. Heartbeats, cron jobs and webhooks keep working overnight.
- Isolated. The agent reads untrusted web pages and emails, so it is safer on its own machine than on the computer that holds your personal files.
- Cheaper than a home machine to start. No hardware to buy; you pay a few dollars to a few tens of dollars a month.
- Easy to grow. When the agent takes on more work, you move up a plan instead of buying a new computer.
How much VPS does an AI agent need?
Memory is the limit you hit first, not CPU. Size the server by what the agent does, not by how clever the model is, because the model usually runs on the provider's systems.
| Kind of agent | Examples | vCPU | RAM | Disk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chat agent on a cloud model | OpenClaw on Telegram or WhatsApp, a custom Python or Node agent calling an API | 1 to 2 | 2 to 4 GB | 25 to 50 GB |
| Workflow automation with AI steps | n8n with the AI Agent node, scheduled workflows, webhooks | 2 | 4 GB | 50 GB |
| Agent that browses the web | OpenClaw browser tasks, Playwright or Puppeteer scrapers, browser-use | 2 to 4 | 8 GB | 100 GB |
| Several agents or several clients | An agency running agents for many customers, multi-agent setups | 4 | 16 GB | 200 GB |
| Local model on the same server | Ollama, LM Studio or vLLM on CPU | 4 or more | 16 GB or more | 200 GB or more |
Each headless browser takes roughly 1 to 2 GB of RAM, which is why browser agents jump to 8 GB. If the server starts using swap most of the day, or browser tasks fail halfway, move up one size. Agent-specific sizing is in our guides to OpenClaw VPS requirements and n8n system requirements.
Do AI agents need a GPU?
No, not if you use a hosted model. With Anthropic, OpenAI, Google or OpenRouter, the model runs on their hardware and your VPS only runs the agent's code, which is light.
A GPU only matters if you want to run the model yourself. Even then, small models do run on a CPU-only VPS with 16 GB or more of RAM; they just reply much more slowly than a cloud API. Choose that route for privacy or to avoid API bills, not for speed.
What to look for in a VPS for AI agents
- Enough RAM for browsers. 4 GB for chat agents, 8 GB if the agent browses.
- NVMe storage. Logs, browser caches and Docker images grow over time, and NVMe keeps them fast.
- Full root access and Docker. Most agent frameworks install with a script or a Docker Compose file.
- Snapshots or backups. So a bad update or a bad skill can be rolled back in minutes.
- The renewal price, not the intro price. Many cheap VPS deals need a one- or two-year prepay and renew at about double.
- Monthly billing. Useful while you find out how much server your agent actually uses.
- Help when it breaks. If you do not want to manage Linux, pick a host that sets the agent up and answers tickets.
Security matters as much as size: keep control ports on localhost, use SSH keys and a firewall, and update often. See our OpenClaw security checklist and how to secure a Linux VPS.
VPS providers for AI agents compared
Prices in US dollars per month as published at the time of writing. Budget hosts are cheaper; set-up-for-you hosts cost more and save the setup work.
| Provider and plan | Specs | Price | Renewal or notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Contabo Cloud VPS 10 | 4 vCPU, 8 GB | About €4.50 | Budget pricing; check the term and location before you buy |
| Hetzner Cloud entry plans | 2 vCPU, 4 GB and up | From about €5.49 in the EU | US locations cost noticeably more |
| Hostinger KVM 1 | 1 vCPU, 4 GB | From $4.99 on a long prepay | Renews at $11.99 |
| Hostinger KVM 2 | 2 vCPU, 8 GB | From $6.99 on a long prepay | Renews at $19.99 |
| DigitalOcean Droplet | 2 vCPU, 4 GB | $24 | No intro discount, hourly billing |
| serverserv KVM 1 | 1 vCPU, 4 GB, 50 GB NVMe | $14.99 monthly, $10.49 on 3 years | No intro price jump |
| serverserv KVM 2 | 2 vCPU, 8 GB, 100 GB NVMe | $23.99 monthly, $16.49 on 3 years | No intro price jump |
If the lowest monthly bill is all that matters and you are happy to manage the server, a budget host is hard to beat. If you would rather have the agent installed, secured and working on day one, compare the set-up-for-you options instead.
Which serverserv plan fits your agent?
- Want OpenClaw set up for you? OpenClaw hosting starts at $14.99 a month (2 vCPU, 4 GB), with OpenClaw pre-installed and your first agent task set up free.
- Building with n8n? n8n hosting installs n8n on your own server with no execution caps, and we build your first workflow free.
- Running your own agent code? A KVM VPS gives you full root access: KVM 1 for a chat agent, KVM 2 for browser agents, KVM 3 (4 vCPU, 16 GB) for several agents or a small local model.
- Do not want to manage Linux at all? A managed VPS puts operating system updates, hardening and monitoring in our hands.
Questions
What is the best VPS for AI agents?
For an agent on a cloud model, any reliable VPS with 2 vCPU and 4 GB of RAM works; choose 8 GB if it browses the web. Pick on renewal price, backups and support rather than raw CPU.
How much RAM does an AI agent need?
About 2 to 4 GB for a chat agent on a cloud model, 8 GB for an agent that drives a headless browser, and 16 GB or more if you run a local model on the same server.
Do I need a GPU VPS for AI agents?
No. With a hosted model from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google or OpenRouter, the model runs on their hardware. A GPU only helps if you run the model yourself.
What is the cheapest VPS for AI agents?
Budget hosts such as Contabo and Hetzner start around €5 a month for 4 to 8 GB. Check the renewal price and term, and remember you will set up and secure the server yourself.
Can I run several AI agents on one VPS?
Yes. Give each agent its own user or container, and size by RAM: around 2 to 4 GB per busy agent, plus 1 to 2 GB per headless browser.
