Running an AI agent like OpenClaw on your own server
By the serverserv team · 5 min read · Updated
AI agents are most useful when they are always available. Running one on its own server keeps it online around the clock and keeps your data on a machine you control. This guide explains what that involves, what you need before you start, and how to choose a serverserv OpenClaw plan.
What an AI agent server does
An AI agent is software that uses an AI model to answer questions and take actions, rather than only replying to a single prompt. OpenClaw runs AI agents that answer and act on their own. You connect your AI models and tools, and your agents work around the clock.
People use agents as assistants that answer and act, as support helpers that reply to customers, as research helpers that gather and summarise information, and as shared agents for a team.
When you connect a hosted AI provider with an API key, the model itself runs on the provider's systems. Your server runs the agent: the app, its tools, its settings and its data.
Why give your agent its own server
- It stays on. An agent on your laptop stops when the laptop sleeps or loses its connection. A server keeps running so your agents can work around the clock.
- Your data stays yours. A serverserv OpenClaw plan is a dedicated KVM VPS, not a shared account. Your agent's settings and data live on your own server.
- It does not compete with other work. Keeping the agent on its own server means a busy website or another app cannot slow it down, and a problem with the agent does not affect your other services.
- No setup work. OpenClaw comes pre-installed and set up, so you do not need to know Linux. You work in its web interface.
What you need before you start
- An AI provider account. You connect your own AI provider inside the app, usually with an API key. AI model costs are not included in the plan; your provider bills you directly, usually based on usage.
- A clear first task. Agents work best when you start with one job, such as answering common questions or summarising reports, then expand once it works well.
- Access to the tools you want it to use. If your agent will work with other services, have the accounts and access details ready, and give it only the access that task needs.
- A plan for checking its work. Review what your agent does, especially early on and for anything that reaches customers.
Security basics
An agent can act on your behalf, so treat its server like any other important system:
- Protect your API keys. Store them only inside the app, never in shared documents or chat messages. If a key may have leaked, revoke it at your provider and create a new one.
- Set a spending limit or usage alerts in your AI provider account, if your provider offers them, so a mistake cannot run up a large bill.
- Use strong, unique passwords for the app and your client area.
- Give the least access needed. Connect only the tools and accounts each agent needs, with the lowest permissions that work.
- Keep your own copies of important settings and data. Unless your plan includes managed backups, backups are your responsibility.
If you are unsure how updates and backups work on your plan, ask our team.
Choosing an OpenClaw plan
Every OpenClaw plan is a dedicated KVM VPS with NVMe storage, OpenClaw pre-installed and setup included. Prices are per month.
- Personal Use: 4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM, 100 GB NVMe. For one person getting started with agents. From $17.99/mo on a 3 year term, or $24.99 monthly.
- Power User: 6 vCPU, 12 GB RAM, 200 GB NVMe. For heavier personal use and more agents. From $28.49/mo on a 3 year term, or $39.99 monthly.
- Team Deployment: 12 vCPU, 48 GB RAM, 400 GB NVMe. For shared agents used by a team. From $57.49/mo on a 3 year term, or $79.99 monthly.
- Enterprise Scale: 18 vCPU, 96 GB RAM, 600 GB NVMe. For large teams and heavy use. From $114.99/mo on a 3 year term, or $159.99 monthly.
Start with the plan that matches how many people and agents will use it now. You can request an upgrade from your client area later. Order on the OpenClaw hosting page.
OpenClaw or n8n?
Both run on the same server sizes, but they solve different problems:
- OpenClaw runs AI agents that answer and act on their own.
- n8n is a visual workflow tool that connects apps and automates tasks step by step, with AI nodes when you need them.
If you know the exact steps a task should follow, n8n is often the better fit. If you want an assistant that decides how to handle each request, choose OpenClaw. Our n8n self-hosting guide covers the n8n side. If you choose one and later want the other, open a ticket and our team will help you change the installed app.
Questions
Are AI model costs included in the plan?
No. You connect your own AI provider account, for example with an API key, inside the app. Your provider bills you for model usage.
Do I need to know Linux to run OpenClaw?
No. OpenClaw is installed and set up for you, and you work in its web interface.
Does the server run the AI model itself?
When you use a hosted AI provider through an API key, the model runs on the provider's systems. Your server runs the agent, its tools and its data.
Can I switch from OpenClaw to n8n later?
Yes. Open a ticket from your client area and our team will help you change the installed app.
