Hosting renewal price vs intro price: why hosting costs more at renewal

By the serverserv team · 7 min read · Updated

Hosting costs more at renewal because most hosts sell the first term below their regular rate, then bill the full rate once it ends. That hosting renewal price is often two to six times the intro price, and it decides what you really pay. This guide shows real renewal jumps for web hosting, VPS and email, a simple way to work out the true 3-year cost, and the questions to ask before you buy.

Why does hosting cost more at renewal?

The low price on a hosting sales page is an introductory discount that only covers your first term. When that term ends, the plan renews at the host's regular rate, which is usually much higher.

A few patterns make the gap bigger than it first looks:

  • The intro price needs a long prepayment. At the time of writing, Hostinger's lowest shared price needs a 48-month term, Bluehost, GoDaddy, HostGator and InMotion need 36 months, and SiteGround, DreamHost, GreenGeeks and IONOS discount the first 12 months.
  • The renewal price sits in small print. Many pages show it as a footnote or a "renews at" line under the big number.
  • Free extras expire. A free domain for one year, mailboxes free for one year, or an email trial that ends after one to three months all turn into new charges.
  • The struck-through price is not the renewal price. It is often the month-to-month list price, which can be higher again.

None of this is hidden in a legal sense. It is simply easy to miss when you compare headline prices.

How big is the hosting renewal price jump?

For entry-level shared hosting, the typical intro price is about $2.99 a month and the typical renewal price is about $10.99, so most buyers pay three to four times more from their second term.

Host and planIntro price (term)Renews atJump
Hostinger Premium$2.99 (48 months)$10.993.7x
Bluehost Starter$3.99 (36 months)$9.992.5x
SiteGround StartUp$2.99 (12 months)$17.996.0x
GoDaddy Economy$5.99 (36 months)$11.992.0x
DreamHost Launch$2.89 (12 months)$10.993.8x
GreenGeeks Lite$2.95 (12 months)$13.954.7x
Namecheap Stellar$2.28 (1 to 2 years)$4.662.0x
serverserv Starter$3.99 (36 months)$3.991.0x

Prices are USD per month from each host's pricing page at the time of writing (October 2026). Specs differ between these plans, so compare sites, storage and email as well as price.

How to work out the true 3-year cost of hosting

Add the cost of the intro period to the cost of every month at the renewal price, then divide by the number of months. That effective monthly price is the fair number to compare.

  1. Write down the intro price and the term it requires.
  2. Find the renewal price. If you cannot find it, ask before you pay.
  3. Calculate (intro price x intro months) + (renewal price x remaining months).
  4. Add any extras that start charging after year one, such as a domain or email.
  5. Divide by 36 for the effective monthly price, and repeat for the following 3 years.

Here is that sum for four entry plans and serverserv Starter on a 3-year term:

PlanFirst 3 yearsEffective per monthNext 3 years
SiteGround StartUp$467.64$12.99$647.64
GreenGeeks Lite$370.20$10.28$502.20
DreamHost Launch$298.44$8.29$395.64
Bluehost Starter$143.64$3.99$359.64
serverserv Starter$143.64$3.99$143.64

Two things stand out. A 12-month intro looks cheap but is the most expensive over three years. A 36-month intro, like Bluehost's, matches a flat price at first, and the difference only shows in year four. Note that Bluehost Starter allows 10 websites and serverserv Starter allows 1, so check that the plans fit your needs, not only the totals.

Do VPS renewal prices work the same way?

Yes. Many VPS hosts discount a 24 or 36-month first term and renew higher, while the big developer clouds such as DigitalOcean and Vultr bill a flat hourly or monthly rate with no intro discount.

  • Hostinger KVM 2 (2 vCPU, 8 GB RAM, 100 GB NVMe): $8.99 a month for 24 months, then $14.99. The month-to-month list price is $24.49. Over 3 years that averages $10.99 a month.
  • Hosting.com 8 GB VPS (4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM): $9.99 a month on a 3-year term, then $29 at renewal. That is $359.64 for the first 3 years and $1,044 for the next 3.
  • IONOS VPS+ M+: a $5 promo for 3 months, then about $14 a month on a 1-year contract.
  • Namecheap Pulsar: $6.88 a month on an annual intro, then $8.88.

A flat price is not always the lowest in the first term. On the same specs, Hostinger's 24-month intro averages less over 3 years than serverserv KVM 2 at $16.49 a month on a 3-year term. Run the sum above for each option, look at what each plan includes, and decide whether predictable costs matter more to you than the lowest first bill. Email, SSL and domains: the renewals people miss

Email and domains often renew higher than hosting, and they are easy to forget because they start as free or nearly free.

  • Email trials. At the time of writing, Bluehost and HostGator include a 1-month Pro Email trial, then charge about $2.50 to $2.99 a month. Hostinger mailboxes are free for the first year, and DreamHost includes a 3-month email trial.
  • SSL. GoDaddy Economy includes SSL free for the first year only.
  • Domains. GoDaddy has listed .net at $0.01 on a 3-year term, then $24.99, and .shop at $0.99, then $59.99. A Cybernews comparison lists a .ai domain at $49.99 for the first year at GoDaddy, then $159.99.

Domains are a special case. Every registrar, serverserv included, has separate prices for registration and renewal, because registries set their own fees. What matters is that both are shown before you buy. On our domains page, a .com is $13.99 to register and $18.99 to renew. Some extensions, such as .xyz, .top and .shop, have a low first year and a higher renewal, and the table shows both.

For email, the serverserv Starter and Business web hosting plans include 5 and 25 email accounts as part of the plan price. Separate Business Email starts at $1.99 per mailbox a month on a 3-year term, or $3.49 monthly, and renews at the price you paid.

Questions to ask before you buy hosting

Ask for the renewal price in writing and check what the intro price depends on. These questions cover most surprises:

  • What is the renewal price for this exact plan and term?
  • How many months must I prepay to get the advertised price?
  • Is monthly billing offered, and what does it cost?
  • Which free extras (domain, email, SSL, backups) end after the first term?
  • Will I be told before a price changes, and how far in advance?
  • Can I cancel before renewal, and what happens to unused time? Read the host's refund policy before you pay.
  • Can I switch terms at renewal, for example from monthly to 3 years?

How renewals work at serverserv

At serverserv, a service renews for the same term at the same price you paid. If a price ever has to change, you get at least 30 days' email notice and can cancel before it renews.

You can pay monthly with no contract, or for 1, 2 or 3 years billed once for the whole term. Some starting prices:

  • Web hosting: Starter from $3.99 a month on a 3-year term, or $9.99 monthly.
  • Linux KVM VPS: KVM Mini from $6.29 a month on a 3-year term, or $8.99 monthly.
  • Managed VPS: from $19.99 a month on a 3-year term, or $27.99 monthly plus a one-off $10 setup fee.
  • Business Email: from $1.99 per mailbox a month on a 3-year term.

Every plan and term is on the pricing page, and the rules are in our billing policy and terms.

Questions

Why does web hosting cost more when it renews?

The advertised price is an introductory discount for the first term only. When it ends, the plan renews at the host's regular rate, which at the time of writing is about $10.99 a month for typical entry shared hosting.

Is there web hosting that renews at the same price?

Yes. A few hosts keep the same price at renewal. At serverserv, every service renews for the same term at the price you paid, and any price change comes with at least 30 days' email notice.

Is monthly web hosting more expensive than paying yearly?

Per month, yes. serverserv Starter is $9.99 monthly and $3.99 a month on a 3-year term. Monthly billing costs more but lets you cancel or change plan without a long commitment.

Does the VPS price go up when I renew?

At many hosts it does: Hostinger KVM 2 goes from $8.99 to $14.99 a month after the 24-month intro. serverserv VPS plans renew at the price you paid.

Are there extra costs beyond the hosting price?

Often. Check domain renewals, email after any trial, SSL after year one, backups and control panel licences, and add them to your 3-year total.
