How much does OpenClaw cost per month? The server, the model and the extras

By the serverserv team · 7 min read · Updated

OpenClaw itself is free. What you pay for is a server to keep it running and the AI model it talks to. For one person with a light agent, that is usually about $10 to $20 a month in total. An active agent that works through your inbox and browses for you lands somewhere around $25 to $60, and heavy automation has no natural ceiling. Here is where each dollar goes and how to keep the bill predictable.

Is OpenClaw free?

Yes. OpenClaw is open-source software under the MIT licence, and there is no paid edition or licence fee. You can download it, install it and use it for personal or business work without paying the project anything.

"Free" stops at the software, though. An agent is only useful if it is online when your messages arrive, so it needs a machine that stays on. And unless you run a model on your own hardware, every reply it writes is billed by a model provider. Those two lines make up almost the whole cost.

The three parts of an OpenClaw bill

Every OpenClaw setup has the same three cost lines. Only the sizes change.

Cost lineWhat it pays forTypical monthly range
SoftwareOpenClaw itself$0
ServerA VPS or a home machine that keeps the Gateway online$5 to $25 for a VPS, or electricity for a home machine
AI modelEvery message the agent reads and writesA few dollars for light use, open-ended for heavy use

The server cost is fixed and easy to plan. The model cost moves with how much your agent does, and that is the line that surprises people.

What does the server cost?

A VPS that runs OpenClaw comfortably for one person (2 vCPU and 4 GB of RAM) costs about $6 to $25 a month, depending on the provider and the term you sign up for.

  • Budget VPS hosts start around $5 to $7 a month on a long prepaid term. Watch the renewal: Hostinger's entry plan, for example, has been listed at $6.49 a month on a two-year prepay, renewing at $11.99.
  • Managed OpenClaw services run the server for you. Prices range from a few dollars for metered plans to around $12 to $25 a month for a dedicated, always-on agent.
  • Big cloud VMs on AWS or Google Cloud tend to cost $25 to $33 a month for the same size, before bandwidth.
  • A home machine such as a Mac mini costs nothing monthly beyond power, but you pay around $600 up front and handle uptime yourself. We compare the two in Mac mini vs VPS for OpenClaw.

Browser automation is what pushes the server size up. Each headless browser needs roughly 1 to 2 GB of RAM, so an agent that browses regularly is happier on 8 GB. See OpenClaw VPS requirements for sizing by use.

What does the AI model cost?

The model is billed by your model provider, not by your host, and it is usually the larger and less predictable part of the total. You have three ways to pay for it.

  • API key, pay per use. Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, OpenRouter and others bill by the amount of text processed. A quiet agent that answers a few messages a day costs a few dollars a month. An agent that reads long documents, keeps a big memory file or browses for hours costs far more, because all that text is sent to the model again and again.
  • Subscription sign-in. OpenClaw can sign in with a ChatGPT or Codex subscription, so a plan you already pay for can cover the model. You trade a flat fee for the usage limits that subscription has.
  • Local model. Running a model on your own server removes the API bill, but needs 16 GB of RAM or more and replies much more slowly on CPU. It suits privacy, not speed.

Two things quietly add to the model bill: heartbeats (scheduled check-ins that run around the clock) and retries when a task fails and the agent tries again. Both are easy to point at a cheaper model, which we cover below.

Monthly budgets for light, active and heavy use

These are realistic all-in budgets for one person using a cloud model, at the time of writing.

UseWhat the agent doesServerModelTotal per month
LightAnswers a few Telegram or WhatsApp messages a day, simple reminders$5 to $15A few dollarsAbout $10 to $20
ActiveSeveral channels, inbox and calendar work, some web lookups every day$12 to $25$10 to $40About $25 to $60
HeavyLong browsing sessions, big documents, many scheduled jobs on a frontier model$25 or moreNo natural ceilingSet a hard limit first

Most people start in the light band and drift into the active band as they hand the agent more work. That is fine, as long as you know it is happening. A spending alert with your model provider is the single best protection.

How to keep OpenClaw costs down

Most savings come from sending routine work to a cheaper model and stopping runaway loops.

  • Use two models. Make a fast, cheap model the default and switch to a frontier model only for hard tasks.
  • Point heartbeats and scheduled jobs at the cheapest model. They run all day and add up.
  • Cap retries and loop depth so a failing task cannot run all night.
  • Trim memory files and long system prompts. They are re-sent with every call, so a bloated memory costs you on every message.
  • Review your cron jobs once a month and turn off what you no longer use.
  • Set a monthly spending limit or alert in your model provider's dashboard before you connect busy channels.
  • Size the server to the job. A quiet text-only agent does not need 16 GB of RAM.

What it costs on serverserv

On serverserv, OpenClaw Starter (2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 50 GB NVMe) is $14.99 billed monthly, or $10.99 a month on a 3-year term. That covers the server line of the bill. Your model provider bills you directly for the model, so you always see exactly what the AI costs.

  • OpenClaw comes pre-installed and set up, and we set up your first agent task for free. You connect your model key and chat apps.
  • Billing is monthly or for 1 to 3 years, with no cheap first year that jumps at renewal.
  • If the agent starts browsing a lot, you can move up to Personal Use (4 vCPU, 8 GB) without reinstalling.

Questions

Is OpenClaw free to use?

Yes. The software is free and open source under the MIT licence. You pay for a server to keep it online and for the AI model it uses, unless you run a local model on your own hardware.

What is the cheapest way to run OpenClaw?

A small VPS with a cheap default model, or an old computer you already own, plus a ChatGPT or Codex subscription you already pay for. Expect around $10 a month or less for light use.

Why is my OpenClaw bill higher than expected?

Usually because of long memory files, heartbeats and scheduled jobs on an expensive model, or a task that keeps retrying. Move routine jobs to a cheaper model and cap retries.

Does a bigger server make OpenClaw cheaper to run?

No. The server is a fixed cost. The model bill depends on how much text the agent sends, not on server size. Only buy more RAM if you use browser automation or a local model.

Do I pay serverserv for the AI model?

No. You connect your own model key or subscription, and the provider bills you directly. Your serverserv plan covers the server only.
