How to choose a domain name for your business or AI project
By the serverserv team · 6 min read · Updated
To choose a domain name, pick something short, easy to say and spell, and close to your brand. Then choose the extension that fits your audience and budget: .com for most businesses, a country code for one local market, and .ai or .io for tech and AI products. This guide on how to choose a domain name covers naming rules, extensions, country-code eligibility and a checklist before you buy.
How to choose a domain name in five steps
Start with the name, then pick the extension, then check the practical details. In order:
- Write a shortlist of 5 to 10 names based on your brand, product or what you do.
- Cut anything hard to say or spell. Read each name out loud to someone and ask them to type it.
- Pick the extension that matches your audience: worldwide, one country, or a technical crowd.
- Check availability on the domains page, along with trademarks and social media handles.
- Price it over 3 to 5 years, not just the first year, then register it before someone else does.
What makes a good domain name?
A good domain name is short, memorable, easy to spell after hearing it once, and clearly yours. Most strong names follow a few simple rules.
- Keep it short. Under 15 characters is a sensible target. Every extra letter is a chance to mistype.
- Avoid hyphens and numbers. People forget the hyphen and do not know whether to write "4" or "four".
- Pass the phone test. If you say it on a call, can the listener type it correctly? Avoid double letters where words join, like "expertsstore".
- Match your brand. Use your business or product name, or something very close.
acmeplumbing.comworks better thanbest-plumber-in-town.com. - Leave room to grow. A name tied to one product or city can feel narrow later.
- Stay clear of trademarks. A name that contains another company's brand can be taken from you through a dispute process, even after you have paid for it.
If your first choice is taken, add a short word that fits, such as getacme, acmehq or tryacme, or use the same name on another extension.
.com vs .ai vs .io vs .co: which extension should you choose?
Choose .com if it is available and affordable, because it is the extension people assume. Choose .ai, .io, .dev or .app when your audience is technical and the name reads well, and a country code when you sell mainly in one country.
.com is still the default: 166.6 million of the 401.6 million domains registered worldwide at the end of June 2026 were .com, according to Verisign. Here is how the popular choices compare, with serverserv's prices per year where we sell the extension:
| Extension | Best for | First year | Renewal | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| .com | Almost any business | $13.99 | $18.99 | The extension people type by habit |
| .ai | AI products and start-ups | $191.99 for 2 years | $229.98 per 2 years | 2-year minimum, usually $160 or more to start |
| .io | Developer tools and SaaS | $40.99 | $75.99 | Popular with tech start-ups |
| .co | Companies and start-ups | $21.99 | $44.99 | Short alternative to .com |
| .dev | Developers and portfolios | $12.99 | $18.99 | HTTPS required |
| .app | Apps and SaaS | $12.99 | $19.99 | HTTPS required |
| .org | Non-profits, communities, open source | .991.99 | .998.99 | Open to anyone |
| .xyz | Side projects | $4.99 | $20.99 | Cheap first year, check the renewal |
.dev and .app are on the HSTS preload list, so browsers only load them over HTTPS. That is good for security, but your site needs an SSL certificate from day one. serverserv web hosting includes free SSL.
Choosing a domain for an AI project
For an AI product, .ai is the obvious choice and widely recognised, but it costs about six times as much as a .com each year. Pick it when the name reads well with .ai and the budget allows; otherwise a .com or .io works just as well.
- It is popular. More than one million .ai domains had been registered by January 2026.
- It does not hold back SEO. .ai is the country code of Anguilla, but Google treats it as a generic domain, like .com, rather than one aimed at Anguilla. Google lists .io and .co the same way.
- It needs a 2-year commitment. The registry requires at least two years, so budget about $160 or more to start. serverserv does not sell .ai yet.
- Protect the name. Consider also registering the .com, or the closest .com you can get, and redirecting it, so people who type .com by habit still find you.
- Read it as one phrase. Names like
write.aiorgetwrite.airead well. A name that already ends in "ai", likemailai.ai, does not.
If the project is an AI agent or an automation workflow, you also need somewhere to run it. See OpenClaw hosting and n8n hosting, or read how to run an AI agent on your own server.
Country-code domains and their eligibility rules
A country-code domain such as .de or .ca tells people and search engines that you serve that country, which helps local trust and local search. Some are open to anyone, but several have rules about who can register them.
| Extension | Who can register | serverserv first year |
|---|---|---|
| .us | US citizens, residents or organisations, or a bona fide US presence. Privacy protection is not allowed. | $7.99 |
| .ca | Canadian Presence Requirements: a Canadian citizen, resident or company, or a trademark registered in Canada | $11.99 |
| .de | A German postal address for the holder, or an authorised German agent | $7.99 |
| .eu | EU/EEA citizens wherever they live, or residents and organisations established in the EU/EEA | Not sold here yet |
| .com.au | An Australian presence, such as an ABN or ACN, and a close and substantial connection to the name | Not sold here yet |
| .uk and .co.uk | Open to anyone; Nominet may ask some holders for a UK address for service | $8.99 |
| .in | Open to anyone | $9.99 |
Make sure you meet the rule before you register. A registry can suspend or cancel a domain whose holder does not qualify, and domain registrations are not refundable once active. If you sell worldwide, a generic extension like .com avoids the question, and you can add country codes later for local sites.
Check these before you buy
Run through this list before you pay. It takes ten minutes and prevents the most expensive mistakes.
- Availability of the exact name on the domains page.
- Trademarks in the countries where you trade, using the national trademark office's search.
- Social handles with the same name, so your brand matches everywhere.
- Common typos and the .com version, which you may want to register too.
- The renewal price and the total over 3 to 5 years. Our guide to domain costs shows how to work it out.
- Who owns the account. Register the domain in your business's name with an email address you will control long term, not a freelancer's or a former employee's.
- Past use. For a name that was registered before, look it up in a web archive to check it was not used for spam.
Domain, hosting and email for your project at serverserv
Once you have the name, register it on the domains page and add hosting and email in the same checkout. A small business site fits web hosting from $3.99 a month on a 3-year term, with free SSL and 5 email accounts on Starter. For more or larger mailboxes, business email starts at $1.99 per mailbox a month on a 3-year term.
For an AI agent or automation project, our OpenClaw and n8n plans come with the software set up on your own server. Hosting plans don't jump in price when you renew. If you already own a domain elsewhere, see how to transfer a domain.
Questions
How do I check if a domain name is available?
Search for it on the domains page. If the name is taken, try a short added word or another extension, and check the renewal price before you buy.
Is a .ai domain good for SEO?
Yes. Google treats .ai as a generic domain, so it can rank worldwide like a .com. Rankings depend on your content and links, not the extension.
Is a .ai domain worth it for an AI startup?
It is worth it if the name reads well and you can carry about $100 a year with a 2-year minimum. If budget is tight, a .com or .io works just as well.
Do .ai domains have to be registered for 2 years?
Yes. The registry sets a two-year minimum, so a new .ai usually costs $160 or more for the first two years. serverserv does not sell .ai yet.
Should I buy my domain and hosting from the same company?
It is simpler, with one account, one invoice and no DNS to point between companies. Keeping them separate also works; you just point the domain's DNS at your host.
